Training vs. Coaching

If you still need a personal trainer in six months, something's gone wrong.

There’s usually something behind a search for a personal trainer. You want to feel and move better. Or you’re carrying a sports injury you don’t quite trust. Maybe you want to get stronger for a sport you love. Or you’ve been turning up to train solo at a budget gym in Edinburgh for months and can’t tell if any of it’s working.

What you actually want is someone qualified to look at where you are, build a plan that fits, and make sure you’re doing it right. And you want somewhere to train where you don’t feel judged or rushed.

A good PT will give you that, for an hour or two a week, at £40 to £80+ a session. And it might work. But it usually only works for as long as you keep paying for it.

And that’s the catch with almost every personal trainer in Edinburgh. Typical personal training is built on instruction. Your trainer tells you what to do. The relationship can be real. The gains can be measured. But the model rarely teaches you to train without them.

As soon as you stop your PT sessions, the motivation and progress usually stops with them. Strength Training in Edinburgh is a different thing altogether. It’s support instead of instructions. Follow a personal plan in a private gym in Edinburgh with coaches on the floor for help and motivation when you need it.

At G2G, your coach builds the plan around you, teaches you the skills it asks for, and then steadily hands you the keys. If we do our job well, you’ll need us less and less.

You become your own trainer. Not only does this save you money, you’ll learn more about your body. And those lessons stay. You’ll be comfortable walking into any gym without intimidation.

HOW G2G Coaching WORKS

Why a private gym with personal coaching beats PT.

The point of the early help is that you stop needing it.

G2G Coaching Co-Founder Aidan compares it to a child’s first weeks at school. You walk them in, hang up their coat and settle them at their desk, and it’s exactly the right help at the time. Imagine still doing it when they’re sitting their exams. The early help did its job precisely because they grew out of it.

Your first weeks at G2G are hands-on in the same way. Your coach writes your programme, teaches you the lifts and watches your technique closely. And with every session, the ownership shifts to you slightly more. You learn what the plan is doing and why, how to adjust when life gets in the way, and how to work around a niggle instead of training through it.

At G2G, a coach from our team is always on the gym floor. That means when you hit a plateau or an injury you can’t figure out, help is a few steps away rather than a booking away. You’re not stuck waiting until your next check-in.

Just ask G2G member Charlotte who recovered from her sports injury in weeks and came back even stronger than before.

An honest comparison

Personal trainer in Edinburgh vs. Group Coaching vs. G2G

Here's how G2G compares to hiring a personal trainer in Edinburgh and group coaching. Look, a great PT will be great. But it's a different job to ours as a team of strength and conditioning coaches.

Personal Trainer Group Coaching G2G Coaching
Your plan Written for you The same session as everyone else Written for you, and yours to train
Attention Undivided, every rep of your hour One coach split across the room A coach on the floor, there when you need them
When you train Your trainer's available slots Fixed class times Any session you book, at your own pace
If you're injured Depends on the trainer Scale it down or sit it out Built into your plan, with physio input
Long term Progress usually stops when the sessions do You get fitter, but not more independent You learn to run your own training
Cost a month £320 to £480 for two hours a week £90 to £180 for unlimited classes £139 to £258 train as often as your plan calls for

Personal trainer costs based on £40 to £60 a session, the typical range in Edinburgh.

WHY G2G Coaching

Everything you want from a personal trainer. Without the bits you don't.

Our members have been there and done that. They've tried the trainers, the budget gyms and the awkward group classes. Here's what they tell us is different about G2G Coaching.

Support instead of instructions

Coaches on the floor. Not in your face.

There's a coach in the room every session. You'll get a technique check when you need one and a quiet word if something looks off. Nobody counts your reps at you or stands over your shoulder while you work.

Built around you

A personal plan instead of a checklist.

Your programme is written around your history, your goals and anything you're working around. A condition or an old injury gets built in from day one, not improvised mid-session. Our coaches work directly with our physio partner when they need to.

Go at your own pace

Progress that lasts.

No one pushes you to lift heavier than you should. Your plan progresses at the rate your body can actually take, which is how progress lasts. Members here range widely in age and experience, and the coaching adjusts to every one of them.

Less dependence than a PT

You need us less over time.

The longer you're here, the less you need us. You learn to read your own training and adjust it yourself. And when something comes up that you can't solve, a coach steps in with a course correction rather than a rescue.

“I can highly recommend G2G to anyone committed to taking their fitness journey to the next level. You won’t find a one-size-fits-all approach here, instead they’ll work with you develop a program that works best for you.”

FAQs

What you're probably wondering.

How much does a personal trainer in Edinburgh cost?

A personal trainer in Edinburgh can range between £40 and £80+ per hour. One session a week and you’re looking at anywhere £160 and £320. Multiple sessions a week and you’re looking at even more. This is why we’re advocates for coaching. Because a private gym in Edinburgh with coaches on the floor is more cost-effective than a PT. And it can help you build habits that last.

Who’s the best personal trainer in Edinburgh?

There are plenty of fantastic personal trainers in Edinburgh. But we honestly think the best personal trainer is you with between four and six months of coaching at G2G. One of our coaches Rauraidh wrote an article on the importance of a coaching-based environment and how much more effective stacked up against personal training.

What’s the difference between a Personal Trainer and a Coach?

Personal training is built on instruction. Your trainer tells you what to do, they’re beside you while you do it, and it works well for as long as the sessions continue.

Coaching has a different goal. Your coach builds the plan around you, teaches you the skills it asks for, and then hands over ownership so you can run it yourself. Both are valid. The difference is that one keeps you dependent on the sessions and the other is designed to make you self-sufficient.

Our co-founder Aidan has written about this in more depth about the differences between Training vs. Coaching.

How does G2G Coaching work?

You start with a free consultation call where we talk through your goals, your training history and anything you’re working around. Your coach then writes a programme built specifically for you.

You book a slot, come in, and train your own programme at your own pace, with a qualified coach on the gym floor every session for form checks or questions. The gym is capped so there’s always space and equipment.

Over time you learn what your plan is doing and why, so you’re running your own training rather than waiting to be told what to do.

Is G2G Coaching cheaper than a personal trainer in Edinburgh?

Yes. One personal training session a week costs roughly £160 to £320 a month, and two sessions a week can reach £640. A G2G Coaching membership starts at £139. And membership covers every session you train rather than a fixed number of booked hours. So you’re getting coaching more often, for less than you’d pay a personal trainer for one hour a week.

Can I still get one-to-one coaching with G2G?

Yes. Our G2G Performance membership gives you a dedicated coach who carries out a full movement assessment, builds your programme around your goals and injury history, and reviews your progress with you every month. It’s the closest thing we offer to a traditional personal trainer relationship, without paying by the hour.

If that’s what you’re after, mention it on your consultation call and we’ll talk it through.
