RAURAIDH PURNELL

Health & Physical Performance Coach/ Research and Education Officer
I am Rauraidh, I have been coaching athletes for 10 years, accumulating knowledge, experiences and skills to practically apply that knowledge. I am driven by a combination of my own long term injuries, enjoyment of being coached myself, fascination with understanding the adaptive capabilities of the human body, and experiencing personally and vicariously the growth that comes through the catalyst of training. My approach to coaching is trying to understand the person and the athlete, build a targeted complimentary plan, and over time go from coach led to athlete led training.

Background

My coaching experience and interests are in physical preparation for sports performance for any level of athlete. I have spent time as a strength and conditioning coach at the Scottish Rugby Union working with a range of squads from under-16 to Senior national team. My passion is fields sports, watching, playing, and coaching, I even have an NFL fantasy league that I probably take far too seriously. So to keep my passion quenched, I coach speed and conditioning to the Edinburgh Bloods AFL team, helping them to 3 national titles in a row. Alongside the field sports I love seeing athletes become really strong, particularly in powerlifting and bodybuilding, which has given me the opportunity to coach athletes to international competition. My coaching experience is based on a foundation of education and interest in research, through achieving a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science and a MSc in Strength & Conditioning and running the coaches education at G2G. I enjoy keeping up to date with current research on sport science and strength & conditioning, letting that inform my coaching practice. Outside of coaching, I read a lot of history books and listen to hours of podcasts, my favourite being Dan Carlin’s hardcore history. I usually stick one of those on or a country music playlist whilst I am outside doing some woodwork, mostly a mixture of joinery and carving, my long term aim is to try and find a way to build my ow n log cabin in the wilderness. As I mentioned before I like American football which I watch every week with fellow coach Donnie, and I am a big Seattle Seahawks fan!

Coaching style

My coaching style is thoughtful and evidence based, I strive to understand and then provide what the athlete/ person needs to excel.
